Durch einen Brief Sullas ist überliefert, dass Stratonikeia während des 1. Mithridatischen Krieges loyal an Roms Seite stand und sogar eine aktive, wenn auch überwiegend diplomatische Rolle in dem Konflikt einnahm. In dieser Phase zeigt sich für Stratonikeia eine neuerlich erhöhte Prägeaktivität, aus der auch die vorliegende Münze hervorging. Interessant ist jedoch auch der numismatische Blick über den Konflikt mit Mithridates hinaus. Nachdem Rom als Sieger feststand und der römische Senat Stratonikeia die u. a. Kontrolle über den Hafen von Keramos gewährt hatte, begann zweifellos eine Phase wirtschaftlichen Wohlstands für die Stadt. Dennoch lässt sich keine Münzprägung feststellen, die auf diesen ökonomischen Zugewinn hinweist. A letter from Sulla records that Stratonikeia remained loyal to Rome during the First Mithridatic War, even taking an active, albeit mainly diplomatic, role in the conflict. This period saw a renewed increase in minting activity in Stratonikeia, resulting in the production of this coin. However, it is also interesting to take a numismatic glance beyond the conflict with Mithridates. Once Rome had emerged victorious and the Roman Senate had granted Stratonikeia control of the Keramos harbor, among other things, it is clear that a period of economic prosperity began for the city. Nevertheless, there are no signs of minting activity that would testify to this economic growth. Cf. Das kleine Weinstädtchen (vgl. die Ikonografie der Münzen) war berühmt, weil in ihm ein Grab des Kar, des Stammvaters aller Karer, gezeigt wurde. Stephanos Byzantios, s.v. Souangela bemerkt dazu: Suángela: Eine Stadt in Karien, wo sich das Grab des Kar befindet, wie auch der Name deutlich macht, denn die Karer nennen das Grab Soúas, den König aber Gélas. The small wine town (cf. the iconography on the coins) was famous for containing the tomb of Kar, the progenitor of all Carians. Stephanos Byzantios, s.v. Souangela, comments on this. Suángela: A city in Caria where the tomb of Kar is located, as the name clearly indicates; the Carians call the tomb Soúas but the king Gélas. A citizen is referred to as Souangeleús. Die Lesung des Magistratsnamens als ΜΑΡ- (Maros) basiert vermutlich auf dem Vergleich mit Bronzemünzen aus Tabai (SNG Winterthur 3555), auf denen der Name vollständig ausgeschrieben ist. Denkbar wäre jedoch bei diesem Stück auch die Lesung als ΚΑΡ-. Diese beträfe dann jedoch auch das Stück der SNG Keckman (auch dort ist die Legende nur bruchstückhaft erhalten), dessen Revers stempelgleich mit der vorliegenden Münze ist. Wie dieser Magistratsname zu vervollständigen wäre, bliebe dann jedoch fraglich.

The reading of the magistrate’s name as MAR- (Maros) is presumably based on a comparison with bronze coins from Tabai (SNG Winterthur 3555), which spell out the name in full. However, it is also conceivable that the inscription on this piece could be read as KAP-. This would also apply to the piece from SNG Keckman, where the legend is also preserved only in fragments, and whose reverse features the same die as this coin. Nevertheless, it would remain unclear how this magistrate’s name should be completed.

In der Vergangenheit wurde mehrfach versucht, die dargestellten Personen als Maussolos und dessen Gattin, Artemisia, zu identifizieren. Hierin zeigt sich jedoch nur der Wunsch, ein schlüssiges Narrativ zwischen historischen Entwicklungen und Münzprägung zu entwickeln. Die Interpretation des Averses als Herakles ist hinsichtlich der mythischen Verknüpfung zwischen Kos und dem Heros sowie der bezeugten religiösen Kulte auf Kos deutlich schlüssiger. Hinsichtlich des Reverses existieren ebenfalls keine Anhaltspunkte, die individuelle Porträtzüge vermuten lassen. Vielmehr wäre es ein singulärer Einzelfall, dass eine Polis in klassischer Zeit eine (Co-)Regentin auf ihren Münzen darstellte, noch dazu in Angleichung an eine Göttin. Sicher ist indes, dass der weibliche Kopf einem ikonografischen Typ entsprach, den die Menschen auf Kos innerhalb ihres sozio-religiösen Kontextes deuten konnten, den wir heute jedoch (noch) nicht begreifen. Plausibilisieren lässt sich allerdings vor dem Hintergrund des religiösen Lebens auf Kos eine Identifikation als Demeter. Siehe hierzu Ingvaldsen, Hakon, Cos - Coinage and Society. Several attempts have been made in the past to identify the persons depicted as Maussolos and his wife, Artemisia. However, this merely reflects the desire to establish a coherent narrative linking historical developments and coinage. Interpreting the obverse as Heracles is much more conclusive with regard to the mythical link between Kos and the hero, as well as the attested religious cults on Kos. Regarding the reverse, there is also no evidence to suggest that these are the portraits of individuals. In fact, it would be highly unusual for a polis in classical times to depict a female (co-)regent on its coins, especially in imitation of a goddess. What is certain is that the female head corresponded to an iconographic type that the people of Kos could interpret in the context of their society and religion, but which we cannot (yet) understand today. Nisyros liegt südlich von Kos und nördlich von Tilos, genau gegenüber der Spitze der Knidischen Halbinsel. Nisyros ist ein Vulkanberg: In der Mitte der Insel befindet sich ein riesiger Vulkankrater von 4 km Durchmesser; sein letzter Ausbruch war am 4. Mai 1873. Über diesen Vulkan tradiert der Geograph Strabon (X 5, 16 [C 489]) jenen Mythos, dass Nisyros ein Stück von Kos sei. Poseidon, der den Giganten Polybotes verfolgte, habe mit seinem Dreizack ein Stück von Kos ausgestochen und auf den Giganten geworfen. Der liege nun unter Nisyros begraben, zittre vor Wut (Erklärung der häufigen Erdbeben) und spucke Feuer (Erklärung des Vulkanismus). Angesichts dieses Hintergrundes ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass Poseidon der Hauptgott der Insel ist. Die Insel war berühmt für ihre Mühlsteine, die aus dem Vulkangestein hergestellt wurden.

Nisyros is located south of Kos and north of Tilos, sitting directly opposite the tip of the Knidian Peninsula. It is a volcanic island: In the center of the island is a huge volcanic crater measuring 4 km in diameter; its last eruption occurred on 4 May 1873. The geographer Strabo (X 5, 16 [C 489]) recounts the myth that Nisyros is part of Kos referring to this volcano. Strabo said that Poseidon, who was pursuing the giant Polybotes, cut off a piece of Kos with his trident and threw it at the giant. The giant now lies buried under Nisyros, trembling with rage (an explanation for the frequent earthquakes) and spitting fire (an explanation for the volcanism). Given this background, it is not surprising that Poseidon is the island’s main god. The island was famous for its millstones, which were made from volcanic rock.
