Philipp II. der Vater Alexanders des Großen, gelangte 359 v. Chr. an die Regierung. Bald nach seinem Regierungsantritt gelang es ihm, das gold- und silberreiche Pangaiongebiet unter seine Kontrolle zu bringen, dessen Jahresertrag 1000 Talente betrug und ihm die Ausprägung der schönen Goldstatere, in der Antike Philippeioi genannt, ermöglichte. Der Philippeios war eine der "Weltmünzen" der Antike.
