Nach dem Tod des Seleukos IV. lag die Macht in den Händen des "Premierministers" Heliodoros, der vermutlich für den Tod des Herrschers verantwortlich war. Heliodoros setzte Antiochos, den Sohn des Seleukos, als Schattenkönig ein. Antiochos IV. kehrte nach Syrien zurück, erklärte sich zum Mitregenten und beseitigte Heliodoros. 170 v. Chr. ließ Antiochos IV. seinen Neffen Antiochos hinrichten.

Following Seleukos IV’s death, power fell into the hands of “prime minister” Heliodoros, who was possibly responsible for the ruler’s death. Heliodoros installed Seleukos’ son, Antiochus, as a figurehead king. Antiochus IV returned to Syria, declared himself co-ruler and removed Heliodoros. In 170 BC, Antiochus IV had his nephew Antiochus executed.
