Der Ort liegt 10 km nordöstlich von Assos am Nordhang eines Gebirgszuges, wo noch heute Ruinen zu sehen sind. Der geringen Bedeutung des Ortes angemessen, betrug Lamponeias Jahresbeitrag zum Delisch-attischen Seebund nur 1000 Drachmen. Münzen des Ortes sind nur aus dem 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. bekannt. The site lies 10 km north-east of Assos, on the northern slope of a mountain range where ruins can still be seen today. Consistent with its minor importance, Lamponeia’s annual contribution to the Delian-Attic League was only 1000 drachms. All the know coins from this city are from the 5th century BC.
