Tyros war das Zentrum der Purpurgewinnung. Man benötigte etwa 8.000 Pupurschnecken (Murex trunculus), um ein Gramm des extrem teuren Farbstoffes zu herzustellen. Heute liegt der Preis für ein Gramm Purpur um 2.000 Euro.
