Akragas war eine dorische Gründung. Von Beginn an prägte die Stadt - wie die meisten griechischen Städte Siziliens - im euböisch-attischen Fuß. Der Adler ist der heilige Vogel des Zeus, der Krebs symbolisiert den namengebenden Flussgott Akragas.
