Gordianus I. wurde zusammen mit seinem gleichnamigen Sohn in Afrika Anfang Januar 238 zum Augustus ausgerufen und vom Senat anerkannt. Nachdem sein Sohn Schlacht und Leben gegen den Legaten von Numidien verloren hatte, beging er nach noch nicht einmal einem Monat Regierung Selbstmord.
