Heinrich VIII. hatte im Juni 1509 kurz nach seiner Thronbesteigung Katharina von Aragon, die Witwe seines Bruders, geheiratet. Es war eine Liebesheirat, doch konnte Katharina Heinrichs Erwartungen auf einen männlichen Thronfolger nicht erfüllen. Es kam zu Fehl- oder Mädchengeburten; ein Sohn starb schon wenige Wochen nach seiner Geburt. Heinrich begann zu glauben, dass seine Ehe verflucht sei. Nachdem Katharina aufgrund ihrer vielen Geburten auch viel von ihrer Attraktivität eingebüßt hatte, verliebte Heinrich sich 1526 in die schöne Hofdame Anne Boleyn. Nun begann er, die Annullierung seiner Ehe mit Katharina zu betreiben. Heinrich hat gehofft, dass Papst Clemens VII. seine Ehe mit Katharina für nichtig erklären würde, weil er die Reformation in England bekämpft hatte. Papst Leo X. hatte ihm am 17. Oktober 1521 sogar den Titel eines Fidei Defensor/Verteidigers des Glaubens verliehen. In einem Buch hatte er den sakramentalen Rang der Ehe und den Primat des Papstes herausgestellt. Er hatte sich jedoch getäuscht. Leos Nachfolger Clemens VII. lehnte beharrlich die Annullierung seiner Ehe mit Katharina ab. Schließlich brach Heinrich mit dem Papst und wurde im Mai 1531 vom Parlament zum Oberhaupt der Kirche Englands und Irlands erklärt. Im Januar 1533 heiratete er Anne Boleyn, die ihm im September Elisabeth gebar. Als Heinrich daraufhin exkommuniziert worden war, verabschiedete das Parlament am 3. November 1534 die Act of Supermacy: "be it enacted by authority of this present Parliament, that the king our sovereign lord, his heirs and successors, kings of this realm, shall be taken, accepted, and reputed the only supreme head in earth of the Church of England, called Anglicana Ecclesia". Im Jahre 1543 verlieh das englische Parlament ihm den Titel eines ‹Verteidigers des Glaubens›, diesmal in dem Sinne, dass er ein Verteidiger der Anglikanischen Kirche sein sollte.
Es war wohl eine Folge der Parlamentsentscheidung, dass der König im Jahre 1545 die Prägung einer Goldmedaille in Auftrag gab. Der korfiotische Literat und Diplomat Nikander (ca. 1500-1556) hielt sich damit in London auf und erwähnt die Prägung einer schweren Goldmedaille: "Whence also the King having ordered a gold coin to be struck, of the weight of twenty-five gold pieces, having the King's effigy engraved, with this inscription around it in Hebrew and Greek and Roman characters: "Henry the Eighth, by the grace of God, King of England, France, and Ireland, defender of the faith, and supreme head of the Church of England and Ireland.' Such was the inscription engraved on the coins. From that time forward, the English have alienated themselves from the domination of the Roman Pontiff, and perform their ecclesiastical ceremonies in a manner. And it is said, that he did these things by the advice of his consort, for she happened to be stored with general learning, and those sciences common to us, and subtle in arguing." Cramer, London 1841, 44). Vermutlich wurde diese erste englische Medaille von Henry Bayse, dem Chefstempelschneider der Royal Mint von 1544-1550 entworfen.
Mit ihrer Wiedergabe der Titel des englischen Königs in drei Sprachen (Lateinisch, Hebräisch, Altgriechisch) reflektiert die Medaille eine Bildungsentwicklung der Renaissance. Sie war es nämlich, die diese drei Sprachen in den Mittelpunkt des geistigen Lebens gerückte hatte. Im Jahre 1517 hatte an der Universität Leuven/Louvain/Löwen Frans van Busleyden ein Collegium trilingue gegründet. Es sollte dem Erlernen dieser drei Sprachen und der Erforschung ihrer Literaturen dienen. Der Engländer Thomas Morus und Erasmus von Rotterdam gehörten zu den Freunden Busleydens. Bald wurden in weiteren Universitätszentren Europa ähnliche Institute gegründet, so in Zürich (1525), in Paris (1530) und in Wien (1539/40). Die Münze Heinrichs VIII. ist ein Reflex dieser universitären Aufbruchsbewegung. Heinrich VIII. selbst war polyglott; er beherrschte neben Englisch auch Latein, Französisch, Spanisch und Griechisch und ein wenig Italienisch.
Henry VIII had married Catherine of Aragon, his brother's widow, in June 1509, shortly after his accession. It was a love match, but Catherine could not fulfil Henry's expectations of a male heir to the throne. Miscarriages or girl births occurred; one son died only a few weeks after his birth. Henry began to believe that his marriage was cursed. After Catherine had also lost much of her attractiveness due to her many births, Henry fell in love with the beautiful court lady Anne Boleyn in 1526. He now began to pursue the annulment of his marriage to Catherine. Henry had hoped that Pope Clement VII would annul his marriage to Catherine because he had fought the Reformation in England. Pope Leo X had even given him the title of Fidei Defensor/Defender of the Faith on 17 October 1521. In a book he had emphasised the sacramental rank of marriage and the primacy of the Pope. However, he was wrong. Leo's successor Clemenes VII persistently refused to annul his marriage to Catherine. Finally, Henry broke with the Pope and was declared head of the Church of England and Ireland by Parliament in May 1531. In January 1533 Henry married Anne Boleyn, who bore him Elizabeth in September. When Henry was subsequently excommunicated, Parliament passed the Act of Supermacy on 3 November 1534: "be it enacted by authority of this present Parliament, that the king our sovereign lord, his heirs and successors, kings of this realm, shall be taken, accepted, and reputed the only supreme head in earth of the Church of England, called Anglicana Ecclesia". In 1543, the English Parliament granted Henry the revoked title of ‹Defender of the Faith›, this time in the sense that he was to be a defender of the Anglican Church.
It was probably as a result of the Parliamentary decision that the King commissioned the minting of a gold medal in 1545. Just at that time the Corfiot literary figure and diplomat Nikander (ca. 1500-1556) was in London and mentions the minting of a heavy gold medal: "Whence also the King having ordered a gold coin to be struck, of the weight of twenty-five gold pieces, having the King's effigy engraved, with this inscription around it in Hebrew and Greek and Roman characters: "Henry the Eighth, by the grace of God, King of England, France, and Ireland, defender of the faith, and supreme head of the Church of England and Ireland. Cramer, London 1841, 44). Presumably this first English medal was designed by Henry Bayse, the chief die engraver of the Royal Mint from 1544-1550.
With its rendering of the English king's titles in three languages (Latin, Hebrew, Ancient Greek), the medal reflects an educational development of the Renaissance. It was the Renaissance that placed these three languages at the centre of intellectual life. In 1517, Frans van Busleyden founded a Collegium trilingue at the University of Leuven/Louvain/Löwen. It was intended to serve the learning of these three languages and the study of their literatures. The Englishman Thomas Morus and Erasmus of Rotterdam were among Busleyden's friends. Soon, similar institutes were founded in other university centres in Europe, such as Zurich (1525), Paris (1530) and Vienna (1539/40). Henry VIII's coin is a reflection of this university awakening. Henry VIII himself was polyglot; in addition to English, he knew Latin, French, Spanish and Greek and a little Italian.
