Die zu Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts von Portugiesen entdeckten Inseln waren von 1598 bis 1710 eine holländische Besitzung. 1715 bemächtigte sich Frankreich der Inseln, die sie im Jahre 1810 nach tapferer Verteidigung an Großbritannien verlor. In den letzten Tagen der französischen Herrschaft ließ der Inselkommandant Notmünzen prägen, da die Geldversorgung der Eilande infolge der britischen Seeblockade nicht gegeben war.
