Die offiziellen Goldmünzen Preußens waren die "Pistolen" (Friedrichs d'or) zu 5 Talern. In vielen Teilen Europas (norddeutsche Küstenländer, Süddeutschland, Niederlande und Osteuropa) war jedoch der Dukat die gängige Goldmünze. Der Handel mit diesen Ländern führte daher zur Ausprägung von Dukaten.
