Durch einen Brief Sullas ist überliefert, dass Stratonikeia während des 1. Mithridatischen Krieges loyal an Roms Seite stand und sogar eine aktive, wenn auch überwiegend diplomatische Rolle in dem Konflikt einnahm. In dieser Phase zeigt sich für Stratonikeia eine neuerlich erhöhte Prägeaktivität, aus der auch die vorliegende Münze hervorging. Interessant ist jedoch auch der numismatische Blick über den Konflikt mit Mithridates hinaus. Nachdem Rom als Sieger feststand und der römische Senat Stratonikeia die u. a. Kontrolle über den Hafen von Keramos gewährt hatte, begann zweifellos eine Phase wirtschaftlichen Wohlstands für die Stadt. Dennoch lässt sich keine Münzprägung feststellen, die auf diesen ökonomischen Zugewinn hinweist. A letter from Sulla records that Stratonikeia remained loyal to Rome during the First Mithridatic War, even taking an active, albeit mainly diplomatic, role in the conflict. This period saw a renewed increase in minting activity in Stratonikeia, resulting in the production of this coin. However, it is also interesting to take a numismatic glance beyond the conflict with Mithridates. Once Rome had emerged victorious and the Roman Senate had granted Stratonikeia control of the Keramos harbor, among other things, it is clear that a period of economic prosperity began for the city. Nevertheless, there are no signs of minting activity that would testify to this economic growth. Cf.
